28 days later was turned digital since the director and the screenwriter, Alex Garland (which will make the adaptation ofElden Ring), wanted to reproduce the popularity of the cameras of the time. The goal was to imagine how people would have filmed the apocalypse with these devices. Since then, smartphones have taken their place in 28 years later.
Strengthen fear by filming with the iPhone
The team created three configurations for the sequences filmed at the iPhone: an eight -camera system transportable by a person, another with ten aircraft and a third to twenty.
“I never say that, but there is an incredible plan in the second half of the film where we use the configuration at 20 cameras, and you will know it when you see it”entrusts Danny Boyle to Ign.
Danny Boyle describes the use of 20 iPhone as “Basically a poor bullet time”reference to a visual effect that uses several cameras to freeze or slow down time. The configuration can be fixed on cranes or carts to offer a field of vision at 180 degrees. The team can then choose from the images of each iPhone to navigate between perspectives or make time leaps, both in front and back.
For 28 years laterDanny Boyle used this system during violent scenes and amplifying their impact. “For a while, the public is inside the scene, action, rather than conventionally observing an image”explains the director.
The teams did not use only iPhone but also drones, cameras fixed on the actors and even farm animals to create a total immersion. The 2.76: 1 wide screen format was chosen to strengthen the feeling of concern and push spectators to constantly scrutinize the screen to locate threats.
