Bad news that the screenwriter (a little) compensated for by suggesting that the HBO series could last longer than expected.

Fewer episodes…

Questioned by our colleagues from webzine DeadlineCraig Mazin (also author of the series Chernobyl) explained this decision to offer a second season shortened to seven episodes, while the first had nine:

“The narrative material we got from the second part of the game is much greater than from the first game, so part of what we had to do from the beginning was figure out how to tell that story over the seasons.”did he declare.

He keeps on : “When you do that, you're looking for natural ending points. And as we explained, in this Season 2, the natural split point came after seven episodes.”

A simple reason for narrative structure therefore. It is true that video games The Last of Us Part II (released in 2020) is significantly more complex and ambitious in its story than the first part of 2013. This therefore has many more important characters, and relies more on flashbacks.

Craig Mazin clarifies this decision: “We just want to reassure people that if this upcoming season is a little shorter than the first, it's not because we're taking less time to tell the stories, it's because we want to take our time”.

The story of The Last of Us Part II includes a major event from its very first hours. The co-creators of the series therefore seem to want to make this event a key moment in season 2, and probably have it arrive as late as possible, to better launch a hectic season 3.

…but no more seasons?

Precisely, as a consolation gift for fans, Craig Mazin suggested that the series could last much longer than the 3 seasons announced.

“We don't think we'll be able to tell the story in just two seasons, because we're taking our time and going down interesting paths, which we already did a little bit in season 1. (…) As long as the People will continue to watch, we will be able to continue to make more. Season 3 will be considerably longer. And the story may even require a season 4.
