Google didn't wait Samsung and its Galaxy S24 Or Apple and iOS 18 to get started in artificial intelligence. Marketing element of the Pixel 8, it is also being cut an increasingly important place on this generation with Gemini Nano. The Mountain View firm should logically intensify its efforts with the next generation. We were also given some information on the models expected for summer 2024: the Pixel 9.

With the Pixel 9, Google would first diversify its range of smartphones by going from two to three models compared to previous generations. We would be entitled to a Pixel 9, a Pixel 9 Pro and a Pixel 9 Pro XL.

In addition to different screen diagonals, the latter would adopt a different design from the Pixel 8, starting with the photo module. We would in fact go from a bar spanning the entire width of the smartphone to an oblong island, always horizontal.

Visuals created by the leaker OnLeaks also allows us to get an idea of the developments envisaged by Google with its Pixel 9 And Pixel 9 Pro.

On the photo module, the standard model would retain its two sensors (wide-angle + ultra-wide-angle) and its LED flash, while the Pro would also benefit from the telephoto lens with x5 optical zoom and the temperature sensor (already used on the Pixel 8 Pro).

Last notable development, the edges would be flat, like what Apple has offered since the iPhone 12 or even Samsung with the Galaxy S24 and S24+.

Recent benchmarks revealed the performance of the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro XL. Both embedding the next generation of Google chip, aka the Tensor G4, they would respectively have 8 GB (similar quantity to the Pixel 8) and 16 GB of RAM (+4 GB compared to the Pixel 8 Pro).

We thus discover that the Pixel 9 obtained a score of 1590 points in single core and 3821 points in multi-core, compared to 1950 and 4655 points for the Pixel 9 Pro. In other words, Google would fall short of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Apple's A17 Pro.

For comparison, the models released this fall 2023 had obtained the following scores:

  • Pixel 8 : 1045 points in single core and 3294 points in multi-core
  • Pixel 8 Pro : 1727 and 3433 points

The performance gain compared to the current generation would thus be 52.15% and 12.91% in single core for the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro XL respectively, and 16% and 35.6% in multi core.

An opportunity for Google to run new, more resource-intensive AI functions.

The screens

Like Apple's future iPhone 16s, Google would offer different screen sizes for each of its next models.

In the last news, rumors mentioned a 6.03-inch screen for the Pixel 9, 6.1 inches for the Pixel 9 Pro and 6.5 inches for the Pixel 9 Pro XL. A recent source leaned towards 6.24 inches, 6.34 inches and 6.73 inches. One thing is certain, the standard and Pro models will have an almost similar diagonal, while the Pro XL will keep or significantly reduce that of the Pixel 8 Pro.

In terms of technical specifications, these would all be at 120 Hz. We can notably expect the same treatment as for the Pixel 8 in terms of adaptive refresh rate, i.e. from 60 to 120 Hz for the standard model and from 1 to 120 Hz for the Pro.

An innovation would still be there: Adaptive Touch, a function that automatically changes the touch sensitivity of the screen. This would make it possible to use the Pixel 9 panel in rainy weather.

The photo part

If there is one element that is quite discreet on the rumor mill, it is the new photo features that Google is planning for its next smartphones.

Everything we can see comes from the renderings and images shared so far: two photo sensors for the Pixel 9 (wide-angle + ultra-wide-angle), and three sensors for the Pixel 9 Pro (wide-angle + ultra wide-angle + telephoto). The first would be limited to an LED flash, while the others would also be entitled to temperature sensor of the Pixel 8 Pro.

Google should therefore focus on its network of algorithms used for image processing and new software features boosted by artificial intelligence.

The batteries have not been talked about so far. Given the size of the screens, we can expect Google to offer a battery similar to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro on the Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL. The Pixel 9 on its side could be significantly less well off given its slightly more compact size.

Battery life could still be improved thanks to the Google Tensor G4 chip. Last March, Financial News mentioned that the new 4 nm FOWLP (Fan-out Wafer Level) engraving process would allow for better heat management and energy efficiency.

The software part

With the Pixel 9, Google should undeniably continue to position itself in the field of artificial intelligence. On this side, only a rumor dating from December 2023 gives us some clues on this subject, with the potential development of a new AI assistant exclusive to this new generation of smartphones: Pixie.

Seeing theimportance that Gemini has taken at Google in recent months, and especially on the Pixel 8we can assume that these rumors concerned a more in-depth implementation of the conversational agent on the Pixel 9. The opportunity for the company to tackle the Apple's new Siri.

We can also expect something new from the generative AI side (answers, summaries, images, etc.). Android 15, installed natively on the Pixel 9, should also bring its share of features, according to the first betas.

For software tracking, Google should employ the same policy as on the Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and 8a: seven years of Android and security updates. It must be said that this is a considerable advantage over the competition. Only Samsung has so far joined Google with its latest high-end models, the Galaxy S24.

Release date and price

At first glance, a launch sometime in October 2024 seemed the most likely for the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, and 9 Pro XL. Indeed, it's important to remember that the last three generations had an announcement event and a marketing event during this autumn month.

Finally, the Mountain View firm decided to take action much earlier this year, more precisely August 13, 2024. The opportunity to occupy the media scene between Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold/Flip 6, which will be announced in July, and Apple's iPhone 16 expected in September.

On the pricing side, no information has been released yet. As a reminder, the Pixel 8 And Pixel 8 Pro had already led to a price increase of €150 and €200 compared to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, thus displaying them at a starting price of €799 and €1099 in France.

It remains to be seen whether Google has managed to keep its prices the same for its replacements, the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro XL, and how much the new Pro model with its compact 6.1-inch screen will cost.

For information, Apple offers a price difference of €150 between theiPhone 15 Pro and theiPhone 15 Pro Max. In the event that Google plays the same game and does not increase the price of its Pixel 9 compared to the Pixel 8, we can expect a selling price starting at €949 for the Pixel 9 Pro.
