Series Prime Videowhich returns on August 29 on the streaming platform, has indeed begun to reveal its contours with new images, including those of the terrifying Galgal Beings.

“Cursed Kings”

The next issue of English magazine Empire has unveiled its summary, naturally centered on the return of Rings of Powerfeaturing new visuals from the series. Included are never-before-seen glimpses of Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Sauron (Charlie Vickers) in his Annatar form.

Above all, we can learn that the second season will introduce the Barrow Beings – also known as the Mound Spirits. These attack Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin in JRR Tolkien's books, but Peter Jackson's films had decided to omit this passage. Except from an obscure 1991 Russian adaptationso this is the first time we will see them on screen.

These creatures are the reanimated corpses of ancient kings, nobles and human heroes inhabited by corrupted spirits, and who haunt the region to the east of the Shire, not far from the Old Forest. A part of Middle Earth which turns out to be the home of the famous Tom Bombadil, a famous character from the novels who will also be his appearance in season 2.

It's not every day that new characters from the Lord of the Rings are adapted to the screen. A task that Jason Sith, visual effects supervisor on The Rings of Power :

“It was super exciting to take on something I'd never seen before. We've seen the undead before, but not like this. It was like making a little horror film in Middle Earth .”

He keeps on : “It's a threat that just creeps closer and closer until you have nowhere to go and you die. And when they're close? The first thing you see are their glowing blue eyes, piercing the darkness.”

These first images show that Galadriel will encounter these Barrow Beings during her journey in Middle-earth. An idea that makes some fans' hair stand on end, since these creatures are not supposed to appear until several millennia later, after the Witch-king of Angmar has contaminated the Barrows.

But the first season had already proven that The Rings of Power took some liberties with Tolkien's work… hopefully for the sake of the series. The answer begins on August 29 on Prime Video, with the release of season 2 of Rings of Power.

As a reminder, this will tell the story of Galadriel's quest to stop the threat that Sauron poses to Middle-earth.
