If you still use Google Maps and not Waze (also owned by Google, if we still need to remind you) for your car journeys, the application should soon be equipped with a welcome improvement. In any case for those who regularly make journeys in convoys composed of several vehicles, whose starting point is not necessarily the same. The firm has in any case just filed a patent that could eventually lead to an update designed for multi-car journeys.

A concrete improvement for car convoys

It is the Igilta site, with the collaboration of a leaker from @xleaks7, who got their hands on this patent application. We will therefore have to take all this with a pinch of salt, and probably be patient for its elements to actually materialize within the application. It is also possible that this patent will not go any further.

Despite the technical challenge involved, the way Google has come up with the idea seems quite simple. When entering your navigation data before setting off, Google Maps will offer the user the option of adding other people to their travel group (and taking charge of their direction as the lead car). The app will then calculate the route for each member based on their starting point, and notify everyone with an invitation request and various data.

Information collected by the lead car (such as traffic problems or potential parking spots) will be sent to the other vehicles in the group, as well as suggestions for places to take breaks and meet up. The route and remaining travel time of all members is shared in real time to all, while a voice chat system is also mentioned in the patent.

Much like location sharing has become commonplace since its addition to messaging apps like WhatsApp, this tool could quickly find its place in the habits of motorists. The only question now is if and when it will be deployed.
