The least we can say is that DJI does things differently and does not hesitate to surprise. At a time when the bicycle industry is going through difficulties, the brand is embarking on this adventure by focusing, at least initially, on mountain bikes. But what on earth is DJI doing in this mess? To explain these announcements, the firm emphasizes that its know-how acquired with drones can also be expressed on the e-bike market. This concerns its expertise in electric motors, lithium batteries and their management (BMS), not to mention software and connectivity.

DJI Avinox: an entire ecosystem around an ultra-powerful motor

The motorization of an electric bike goes through the motor itself, but also various sensors, its screen, its controls and, of course, its battery. It is therefore a real ecosystem that must be developed, and this is precisely what DJI has done with its Avinox.

Let's start at the beginning, the engine which seems to have been designed primarily for mountain biking. It displays a phenomenal torque of 105 Nm, and even 120 Nm in boost mode. As a reminder, current Bosch engines do not exceed 85 Nm…

The nominal power is 250 W in order to comply with European regulations, but the Avinox motor can deliver 850 W in peak and 1000 W in boost. The motor is also intended to be compact and light, around 2.5 kg, in order to have a minimal footprint to facilitate its integration into the bike frame. To better promote the qualities of its motor, DJI introduces the notion of “torque density”or in this case 42 Nm/kg.

The motor, which meets the IP56 standard, also benefits from numerous fins that contribute to the proper cooling of the system. Inside, the motor conceals a unique architecture implementing a planetary reducer with epicyclic gears and high-strength polymer gears. According to the brand, the assembly would be particularly robust and silent.

DJI currently offers two internal batteries like the Bosch PowerTube. They are unsurprisingly based on lithium-ion technology with a voltage of 35.9 V, the difference being their capacity with 600 and 800 Wh respectively. The first battery weighs 2.87 kg and fully recharges in 4 h 45 min (2 h 26 min from 20 to 80%). A fast charger will be offered for a recharge time of 2 h 40 min and 1 h 12 min. Its big sister of 800 Wh is logically heavier (3.74 kg) and takes a long time to recharge.

The motorization control is based on a 2-inch Oled touch screen displaying a density of 326 dpi for a maximum brightness of 800 nits. This console hides complete connectivity with Bluetooth 5.1, but also 4G without forgetting a multitude of sensors. Thus, a GPS chip is present, as is a barometer.

The screen is designed to connect via Bluetooth to TPMS valves that will display tire pressure! A USB-C socket is also used to quickly charge a smartphone thanks to a power of 65 W. The cyclist will benefit from four classic assistance modes: Auto, Eco, Trail and Turbo, with Boost mode occasionally providing increased power. DJI has also provided a Walk mode to facilitate progress when pushing the bike on a sidewalk, while the Auto Hold function prevents it from rolling back on a slope.

As you will have understood, an app is also on the program to, for example, protect the bike from theft, record the cyclist's exploits or update the firmware of the various components. The most advanced users will also be able to define a personalized assistance mode.

Finally, they will be able to change the assistance mode and navigate the different menus on the screen via a Bluetooth remote control. These remote controls are powered by a battery given for a lifespan of two years at best.

The Amflow: very light, high-end e-MTBs

Never being better served than by yourself, DJI announces an eMTB equipped with its Avinox platform and available in two versions: Amflow PL Carbon and Amflow PL Carbon Pro. It is a full-suspension and ultra-light mountain bike thanks to its 2.27 kg carbon frame. The brand announces a total weight of 19.2 kg for the most high-end version.

The Amflow PL features Fox suspension with 160mm of travel at the front and 150mm at the rear. The four-bar kinematics help prevent pedaling bounce. The Amflow was designed to be versatile and efficient. To go even further, the bike accepts a 29 or 27.5-inch rear wheel to prioritize efficiency or maneuverability.
