The opening of space to the private sector should soon take a new step. The Polaris Dawn mission of the Polaris space program actually intends to carry out the first spacewalk by a private organization. SpaceX, the operator of the mission, just announced that the launch of Polaris Dawn could take place as early as July 31.

A spacewalk and 38 experiments

The Polaris program, founded by billionaire Jared Isaacman, aims to further democratize access to space by offering the possibility of reaching Earth's orbit without going through the usual space agencies. The first mission in this sense, called Polaris Dawn, must, thanks to a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, be placed in an orbit 700 km from Earth, further than the International Space Station (ISS). In this orbit, the entrepreneur wants to perform a 2-hour spacewalk. The five days of orbiting our planet will also allow 38 scientific experiments to be carried out.

A SpaceX development

To do this, SpaceX had to innovate again. First, the chosen orbit is unprecedented for a Crew Dragon ship, but if successful, it should technically give NASA the means to one day repair the Hubble Space Telescope, which badly needs it. The capsule will also be different from usual, as it will not have an airlock to reach space. Thus, during Jared Isaacman's spacewalk, the entire ship will be depressurized and exposed to a vacuum.

In addition, Elon Musk's company has developed a “homemade” spacesuit for the occasion, but potentially useful for the American Artemis program to return to the Moon. It was also the delay in its design that had not allowed to set a very precise date for the start of the Polaris Dawn mission.
