How the price table works

At the launch of its Razr 50 Ultrathe brand's new high-end folding smartphone, Motorola has flexed its muscles by offering a larger external screen than the competition, and truly versatile. This 4-inch display, compared to 3.6 on the previous model, has refined borders and strives to redefine the use of folding smartphones. Ahead of its full test, more details on the cover display of this Motorola Razr 50 Ultra.

A screen that sees bigger

The choice of a 4-inch external display allows it to cover almost the entire front surface of the Razr 50 Ultra, offering a resolution of 1272 x 1080 pixels. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and its 3.4-inch display, but also to the 3.6-inch panel of the Razr 40 Ultrathe 50 Ultra offers a more immersive visual experience. Here are a few figures to convince you: while the 40 Ultra's display occupied 42.6% of the available space, its successor's sits on 55.96% of the front.

The panel benefits from LTPO technology, which allows a variable refresh rate of up to 165 Hz to save energy and provide perfect fluidity. A benefit that is difficult to enjoy on such a small surface. Although the maximum brightness announced is 2400 cd/m², we measured a peak at 1133 cd/m², which is nevertheless more than comfortable in full sunlight.

Above all, the 50 Ultra is no longer as prone to reflections as its predecessor. While the 2023 model conceded some 114% of reflections, that is to say that it reflected more light than our reference mirror, Motorola's latest reveals a reflectance of 48.4%. A score in the average of traditional smartphone screens, and which gives it much better readability.

If the display offers almost infinite contrast and zero afterglow time, pOled panel requires, we noted a satisfactory touch delay of 58 ms. Motorola has also taken care of the finish of this screen with a Gorilla Glass Victus coating, which does not prevent it from being subject to fingerprints.

An ergonomic and customizable interface

One of the main advantages of this external display is its compatibility with the majority of Android apps. While some apps can hide options due to the layout of the camera modules, Motorola allows users to choose between a full-screen display or a display limited to the area above the cameras in order to get around this notch. While this external display can accommodate apps such as Facebook, Netflix, or Spotify, and allows sending messages and taking photos, we were surprised that we could not use an application as simple and obvious as Google Files.

An external screen ideal for self-portraits

However, it is worth noting Motorola's efforts to make the use of its external screen more ergonomic. The brand has revised its copy, since the Razr 40 Ultra gave access to a complete application drawer, taking the risk of poorly optimized displays. On the Razr 50 Ultra, the user can choose in the settings of his mobile the apps to which he wishes to obtain shortcuts.

It is possible to configure the external screen in depth

The rest of the display panels host cards/widgets, such as the calendar and weather, as was the case before, whose small format adapts very well to the reduced dimensions of this external screen. Although most applications do not yet offer their own panels, traditional widgets can be added.

It is possible to switch between screens on the same app

The Razr 50 Ultra's internal to external display is smooth and convenient, making apps like Google Maps and YouTube accessible without having to hold the phone open. The external display also has a separate lock screen and home screen.

Lenovo's brand finally tickles the nostalgic fiber of fans of the original Razr range, offering this year again the possibility of answering and hanging up calls displayed on the external screen by folding or unfolding the smartphone. This feature adds a retro touch to the modern design of the Razr 50 Ultra.
