Google is currently testing the display of ads in Maps that appear as a pop-up notification while navigating on the bottom half of the screen. On X, user Anthony Higman shared a screenshot of this feature in testing.

An advertisement deemed distracting by Internet users

According to the user, the ad appeared when he passed by a Royal Farms gas station. The pop-up indicates that it is a content “sponsored” with the name of the place, its rating and the time to get there. Two buttons are available, one to add the step to the journey and the other to cancel the suggestion.

The addition is reminiscent of the ad format adopted by Waze, another Google-owned app that runs similar ads. Since 2018, banners have been displayed at the top of the screen while driving, although some users have said they only appear when stopped.

It is not yet known whether Google is also considering displaying the ads when stopped. Contacted by Android Authoritythe company has not yet responded to the media. Certainly, advertising displays are a recurring business model for the Mountain View firm, but when driving, motorists could be distracted by this visual solicitation.

As this is a test phase, Google may adapt and refine the ad display based on user feedback and security concerns.
