With the new AirPods 4 and Max, Apple almost signals the end of the Lightning port
Lightning has lasted for many long years at Apple. Launched in September 2012 on theiPhone 5this port for charging and transferring data has gradually extended to other product categories. October 2012 marked its arrival on Apple's tablet range with the iPad 4, then 2015 for Mac accessories and December 2016 for EarPods and AirPods 1.
USB-C has gradually become established at Apple
The Lightning port will have finally said goodbye to the Apple company over the last two years, replaced by USB-C:
The Lightning's almost final farewell will finally have taken place on September 9, 2024. Indeed, the new AirPods 4 And AirPods Max sign the agony of this famous port with the arrival of USB-C.
Almost the end of Lightning
A few diehard Gauls equipped with Lightning are still resisting, albeit in vain: Mac accessories (Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad), not forgetting the iPhone SE which should only be equipped with USB-C in its next version 4.
However, the new european legislation requiring the use of USB-C comes into effect on December 28, 2024.
So there's a good chance that Apple will announce an update to these accessories at its next conference for the M4 Macs, expected for next October.
