PS6: Intel reportedly lost contract to manufacture chip for Sony's next console to AMD
The future of the “blue team” will not be played out in the home console market. According to Reuters, Intel would have missed the opportunity to produce the chips for the next generation of Sony consoles, unofficially called PlayStation 6. Three sources confirm negotiations in 2022 involving Broadcom, AMD and Intel. The last two would have been in the lead in the race, before AMD, already supplier of the PS5, took the final advantage. For Intel, this setback would represent a loss of revenue estimated at nearly 30 billion dollars, according to its internal projections reported by two sources.
Differences in the profit margin per chip would have favored AMD's more attractive offer, thus strengthening its partnership with Sony. This continuity immediately resolves the thorny issue of backward compatibility between the future console and PS5 and PS4 games, a crucial commercial argument for Sony. Ensuring the compatibility of games designed for existing AMD chips with a possible new chipset would have been a considerable technical challenge for Intel, probably weighing in the balance during the last negotiations. Asked, Intel was content to express its disagreement with the “characterization” of the article, without further details. We remind you that Sony announced the arrival of the PS5 Proa new model of its home console with more graphics power, for November 7. No statement has been made about its successor by Sony.
