iPhone 17 Pro: 2nm chips confirmed, expect a power boost
As reported GSMArena2nm chips could make their debut with the iPhone 17. Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer TSMC is expected to produce these components despite major production challenges.
TSMC to produce 2nm chips
Apple has reportedly reserved TSMC's entire 2nm production capacity. However, due to the low yields associated with this new technology, these chips are reportedly reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max versions.
Taiwanese sources say TSMC has conducted a demonstration but still needs support from other suppliers to finalize the packaging of the chips. The goal is to make them compatible with Apple smartphones.
This process requires close collaboration between several industry players. Partners provide materials, equipment, silicon intellectual property (IP) and electronic design automation (EDA).
TSMC has already installed the 2nm production line at its Baoshan plant. Production trials are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2024, three months ahead of schedule. This advance could be crucial for the Taiwanese manufacturer to maintain an advantage over its competitors Samsung and Intel in the semiconductor market.
In addition to Apple, Nvidia is among TSMC's potential customers for this 2nm chip technology.
Increased performance: at what cost?
The 2nm chips for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max promise increased performance and improved power efficiency. As a reminder, we also expect to a RAM boost and even more Apple Intelligence. But we will probably have to expect a price increase for this new generation…
