MatePad 12.2 (2024) & MatePad 12 X: Huawei goes all out with the PaperMatte card with its new tablets
As is often the case in the smartphone and tablet market, it is a product that has already been made official on the other side of the globe and that Huawei has announced will be available in Europe, and more specifically in France. The MatePad 12.2 (2024), announced in August, is making its debut on the Old Continent, with a high-end technical sheet to its credit that is reminiscent of recent Apple iPad Pro M4.
The 12.2-inch slate features an Oled screen that works on the tandem principle, like the iPad Pro screen, so: two panels are superimposed to boost the brightness of the device, which is thus announced at a maximum of 2000 cd/m2. Suffice to say that on the tablet market, this value would be a record, especially since it is associated with the brand's anti-reflective technology, the PaperMatte which we have detailed during tests in our laboratories. The device also offers a Kirin 9000S chip, 12 GB of RAM and runs, like all the brand's slates, under HarmonyOS, that is to say without Google services. This high-end model aims to be both oriented towards power and creativity, which is supported by support for a stylus. Finally, we note the integration of two rear photo modules (13 and 8 Mpx) as well as a 10,100 mAh battery compatible with 100 W wired charging, despite the thinness of the device. The MatePad Pro 12.2 is indeed 5.5 mm thick and its weight does not exceed 508 grams.
An “X” model without Tandem Oled
This high-end tablet, priced from €849, does not come alone. It is accompanied by a MatePad 12 X, which is very similar to it, since it adopts the same photo block, offers an anti-glare PaperMatte screen too, and has the same chip and the same battery). It is nevertheless equipped with a little less RAM (8 to 12 GB depending on the version) and, above all, adopts LCD screen technology, which gives it a maximum brightness divided by two. Its weight is also revised upwards, since it goes to 555 grams. Its price is therefore more affordable: expect a starting price of €649.
