Box office: Transformers gets taken down by Beetlejuice 2
Beetlejuice is hanging on! Despite a third weekend of screenings, Tim Burton's feature film has not relinquished its crown and has resisted the arrival of the animated film Transformers: First Classwhich disappoints. We take stock.
Transformers in diesel mode
The sequel to the 1988 cult film confirms its astonishing success, and once again rakes in $26 million for its third week on screen. A nice retention that allows Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to peak at 226 million on American soil.
This confirms Warner's great year after the success of Dune: Part Two (282 million in the United States) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (196 million).
“Beetlejuice 2” has grossed $330 million worldwide, with the same imbalance between the American territory (68.8%) and the international market (31.2%). Enough to largely absorb its budget of $100 million, especially since the film is still due to be released in Japan on September 27.
The big news of the week was Transformers: First Class. Paramount Pictures' animated film finished just behind with just $25 million for its launch. A necessarily disappointing start for a production coming from such a popular franchise, which generated $5.3 billion over nine films.
This new opus Transformers targeted at a younger audience can, however, hope to make up for it in the long term. Preceded by excellent reviews, it has not been released in 60% of the world, and has yet to arrive in South Korean (September 25), British (October 11) and French (October 23) theaters. It is also difficult to estimate its success because we do not know exactly its budget, estimated between 75 and 140 million dollars. The next few weeks will however be decisive.
In the rest of the box office, Speak No Evil with James McAvoy is holding up pretty well in its second week (-48%). However, it won't be enough to give Blumhouse its first success of 2024, as it has had a decidedly mediocre year in terms of both artistic quality and theaters.
Finally, the other new thing this week was Mother Landa horror film starring Halle Berry and directed by Frenchman Alexandre Aja (Crawl, The Hill Has Eyes) which only generated $4.5 million for its launch. A start that was far too light to hope to cover its costs and recover its budget of $20 million.
