DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, a “pro” action camera to compete with GoPro

Unveiled to a few happy few A few days before its launch, DJI's Osmo Action 5 Pro has appeared shortly after the announcement of the launch of the GoPro Hero13 Black. A close-knit branding from the Chinese manufacturer, which does not intend to be left behind by its American competitor, and even less so by Insta360, which is also on the move with the very high-performance Insta360 ACE Pro. DJI is thus launching the new version of the Osmo Action with high-flying features and a very ambitious price.

A high-performance sensor

At DJI, we don't change a look that has proven itself, like with competitors… The new Osmo Action 5 Pro thus takes up the appearance and line of the Action 4, themselves from previous generations with a weight of 146 grams, lighter than its American competitors.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro features a next-generation 1/1.3-inch sensor with a pixel size of 2.4μm. DJI is touting a high dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops with specifications that rival professional cameras. Footage can be captured at up to 4K/120fps with a 155° FOV in 10-bit D-Log M and supports high-brightness HLG displays.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro can also shoot high dynamic range and low light video at 4K/60fps, capturing intricate shadow details without overexposing highlights, improving overall image quality. RockSteady and HorizonSteady modes are present, offering stabilization in normal and wide FOV for the former, with the latter mode stabilizing the image on the roll.

The camera adopts a SuperNight mode using AI-boosted noise reduction algorithms to ensure better management of very low light environments with sharper and clearer sequences. On the photo side, the small camera offers images up to 40 Mpx in 4:3 format and 36 Mpx in 16:9 format.

OLED touchscreen

The Osmo Action 5 Pro features larger, improved front and rear tempered glass touchscreens with high-brightness OLED panels that deliver 1,000 nits peak brightness and improved sunlight visibility. The increased screen size and reduced bezels, with a 16% increase in screen-to-body ratio, have kept the camera body size,

Autonomy on the rise

The Osmo Action 5 Pro offers up to four hours of continuous use on a single battery thanks to the adoption of a low-power 4nm chip, a larger 1,950mAh battery, and DJI's proprietary algorithm that optimizes power saving. This is better than theOsmo Action 4 with a 50% improvement. The technical sheet specifies that the camera is capable of holding up to 3.6 hours at -20°.

Built-in subject centering and tracking

Highlighted by DJI, the Osmo Action 5 Pro features integrated subject centering and tracking technology, enabling gimbal-free filming. Powered by a high-performance 4nm chip and machine learning algorithms, the camera can intelligently detect a subject’s position and dynamically adjust the composition to keep the subject centered in every frame.

Deep water diving

The Osmo Action 5 Pro is capable of diving to 20 m without a housing. Certified EN13319, it meets the internationally recognized standards for diving accessories. The color temperature sensor integrated into the camera allows you to capture true-to-life colors underwater. Settings ensure that the camera starts recording automatically when it is submerged and stops as soon as it has surfaced. It also has a built-in pressure gauge to record depth, duration and altitude data underwater to ensure user safety.
