YouTube: Whether you like it or not, ads are coming to your pause screen
Will YouTube succeed in increasing the subscriptions to its Premium plan even more by putting its users off advertising for good? The service seems motivated to try, since a new type of advertising is coming to Google's video platform. Soon, when you pause a video to watch a detail or go do something else, an ad may appear.
A new format that is less interruptive, but no less intrusive
YouTube, which has been doing its utmost to combat ad blockers lately, has been testing this format for several months now, and says that its rollout to all advertisers is now live. As usual, it will probably be a while before we see any concrete results on the user side.
So far, only a few people have reported seeing this new format on connected TVs, but also on YouTube's mobile app. This format reduces the size of the video in a window and adds an advertisement in the empty space.
As with pre-roll or in-play ads, not all video types will feature ads during the pause. We might naively hope that with this new format, called “non-interruptive,” the amount of interruptive ads will be reduced, but we won't.
More and more advertising everywhere
Let's remember that Google is not the only one wanting to monetize even users' break time, since Amazon wants to do the same thing on Prime Video this year. In addition to the classic advertising added a few months ago, products sold on its e-commerce site should soon be displayed during the break. American services like Peacock, Max, Roku and AT&T also use this format, which may soon become essential. Unless you pay.
YouTube
YouTube is above all a participatory video streaming site where each user (professional or individual) can create their own universe and share all their videos with others.
