AMD Ryzen Z2: The chip for portable consoles would deviate from the Strix Point series
The next generation of Z2 mobile processors will not follow the path of the AI series. According to a product sheet published on the social network X by the insider @Olrak29_, the next APU will have “only” 8 cores on a Zen5 CPU architecture, differentiating it from the Strix Point series and its 12 cores. A logical choice, given their different uses. The Ryzen Z2 processor is specially designed to power portable consoles, with an expected arrival in the next iteration of the ROG Ally from Asus. chipsets The Ryzen AI 300 series Strix Points are intended for laptops, with XDNA2 NPUs boosted to 55 Tops to be able to handle artificial intelligence computing tasks.
Logically, such a debauchery of computing power seems superfluous on machines designed for video games. The Ryzen Z2 will nevertheless have the 16 RDNA 3.5 (or RDNA 3+) computing units in the integrated GPU promised for the Strix Point processors. The opposite would have been surprising: AMD has highlighted the frugality of this new integrated GPU architecture, capable of delivering performance per watt much higher than RDNA3. The result keyboard in hand on some laptops equipped, like the ZenBook S 16is convincing. It now remains to be seen whether AMD will be able to convert the test on console…
