Meta unveils Orion, its first augmented reality glasses
Meta was able to discuss its glasses in collaboration with Ray-Ban during this Meta Connect conference, mentioning in particular a new software update allowing in particular to improve the integration of Meta AI and to add the Reminders function, which reminds you of your daily tasks or your shopping list. But the highlight of the show was not there: indeed, if Ray-Ban Meta allowed the firm to launch into the field, they do not really offer “augmented reality” functions. It is therefore the newly announced Meta Orion which will take on the role of pioneers in the field.
Originally given the pretty code name Project Nazare, the Meta Orion present Meta's vision for the future use of augmented reality in an everyday setting. And their design perfectly communicates the firm's desire to blend into everyday life since they embrace the style of classic glasses (even if they are obviously a little bigger than normal glasses).
To deliver its augmented reality technology, the Orion uses Micro LED projectors directly integrated into the mount to broadcast images directly in front of the user's eyes.
Also note, since we are in 2024, that the Orion obviously takes advantage of generative artificial intelligence capabilities to add contextual elements to the world around the user. In doing so, the Orion can act as a visual guide: if you see a particular object in a room, the Orion can provide you with information related to this object almost instantly. But then, how do you control the glasses? Meta has chosen to integrate into the Orion pack a neural bracelet (responding to the user's gestures) and a wireless box allowing you to directly interact with the data appearing on the screen.
For now, Meta does not plan to market its Orion glasses, which currently remain in prototype form. Mark Zuckerberg's firm intends to work a little more on its project before making it available to the general public. The new and more affordable Meta Quest 3S announced during this same conference will however be marketed from October 15.
