The 50 km/h ring road is coming tomorrow!
Sometimes seen as a standoff between the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and the government or the regional council of Île-de-France, the passage of the maximum authorized speed on the ring road in reality had no chance of 'be rebutted. Indeed, neither the government, through its former Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, or through that of the new one, François Durovray, nor the Regional Council chaired by Valérie Pécresse, were able to interfere with the decision.
A Parisian ring road
Although little used by Parisians themselves (less than 20% of traffic), this urban highway belongs entirely to the city of Paris, which has sole decision-making authority over what happens there. Thus, the new Minister of Transport, who was opposed to this reduction in the speed limit from 70 to 50 km/h can only take note and “regret this decision which will affect millions of Ile-de-France residents” while recalling that no impact study has been carried out on the subject. We had also published an article on the pros and cons of this measurement.
François Durovray, although he indicated that this decision “was legally possible“, still called on Anne Hidalgo to meet again in a year to take stock of the measure and insisted that in the future “future public policies relating to the ring road, a route taken by Ile-de-France residents and not only by Parisians, are taken with a more collaborative and balanced approach“. This refers to the carpool lanes that are to be implemented soon.
A clear agenda
The transition will take place over several days, section by section, and motorists will be well advised to be particularly attentive during this period when the maximum speed will vary from one point to another on the ring road.
From tomorrow, October 1, the internal ring road will be limited to 50 km/h instead of 70 km/h from Porte des Lilas to Porte d'Orléans, which represents a section of 12 km, or approximately a third of the boulevard, 35 km long. It will take a total of six nights of closure (between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.) to replace the 160 speed limit signs on the busiest road in Europe and increase them all to 50 km/h, according to the schedule. following :
Date | Sense | Of | has |
---|---|---|---|
October 1st | Interior | Lilac Gate | Porte d'Orléans |
October 2 | Interior | Porte d'Orléans | Dauphine door |
October 3 | Outside | Bagnolet gate | Swimsuit holder |
October 4 | Interior | Dauphine door | Lilac Gate |
October 9 | Outside | Swimsuit holder | Châtillon gate |
October 10 | Outside | Châtillon gate | Bagnolet gate |
Finally, for those who were wondering exactly the question, the Paris town hall specifies that this new speed limit “does not call into question the ban on the ring road for engine capacities of less than 50 cm3 or for vehicles driven without a driving license”.
