Google puts an AI layer back into ChromeOS and announces two new ChromeBooks
In May 2024, Gemini entered Chromebook Plus with a dedicated application. For this back to school, Google is announcing new features for Chromebook Plus which will be gradually deployed on all models.
Chromebooks welcome Gemini
Chromebooks now have access to the Gemini application, Google's artificial intelligence model. Users will be able to subscribe to the Google One AI Premium plan to benefit from Gemini Advanced and free 2TB Google Drive storage for three months.
In terms of features, Chromebooks will be equipped with Welcome Recap and of Focus. Welcome Recap allows you to resume current tasks where you left them, while Focus allows you to concentrate by turning off all notifications.
Chromebook Plus gains new features
Chromebook Plus, which benefits from a preview of the new features, takes full advantage of artificial intelligence.
A new key, named Quick Insertis now available on the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus. It opens a context menu allowing quick access to various features: text generation with Help me write, adding emojis or GIFs, access to history or Google Drive files. This feature should significantly improve productivity. Chromebook Pluses that do not have this key will be able to use the Fn+F keyboard shortcut.
Help me readpresented in May, is now available. This comprehension aid feature allows you to summarize texts, PDFs or explain complex concepts.
For foreign language video users, Live Translate makes its appearance. As on PCs equipped with Copilot+, Live Translate allows you to subtitle videos in more than 100 languages, live or in text.
Recorder Appthe transcription application already present on Pixel smartphones, is coming to Chromebook Plus. It allows you to transcribe conversations, identify the different speakers and generate summaries.
Video calls also benefit from improvements, with reduced ambient noise and echo, as well as better picture quality.
To support the launch of these new features, Samsung is offering a Galaxy Chromebook Plus with a 15.6-inch OLED screen, while Lenovo is presenting the Chromebook Duet 11, a detachable tablet accompanied by a stylus. The latter should be available in the coming weeks.
