Parking in Paris: is your car affected by the SUV rate?

In addition to the gradual transition to 50 km/h on the Paris ring roadOctober 1, 2024 will mark the entry into force of the famous “SUV” parking rate on the streets of the capital.

As a reminder, Paris City Hall wants to penalize the heaviest vehicles by sanctioning them with an increased parking rate. Only the visitor rate is concerned, “i.e. users who do not have a specific parking right: residential, professional, low-emission vehicle or Handi'Stat”explains the town hall.

For the models concerned, the price of this parking will now be tripled. An hour of parking in one of the first eleven arrondissements of Paris will now cost €18 for drivers of the heaviest vehicles, when the normal rate there is €6, for example.

However, this price does not only apply to SUVs, nor to all SUVs for that matter. Indeed, it is only the empty mass in running order (MVOM, section G of the registration document), also called mass in service, which was used to distinguish between ordinary cars and nasty SUVs. For thermal models, versions weighing more than 1600 kg are affected, while this threshold is 2000 kg for electric ones.

The “SUV” rate is very poorly named

To see things more clearly, we have gone through the technical sheets of the 100 models most present on the second-hand market in France, supposed to be fairly representative of the national automobile fleet. From this list, it appears that 62 models have at least one version affected by this “SUV” price. However, among them, less than half actually are. There are therefore sedans, station wagons and even minivans which will have to pay the “SUV” rate. Utility vehicles are also largely affected, in theory at least, since the professionals who generally drive them are not subject to the increased rate.

The cars most often affected are the largest, newest and most expensive models, on the one hand, but also hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Indeed, the latter, although supposed to be less polluting, are heavier than the classic gasoline and diesel versions, which can earn them a sanction from the Paris town hall.
