Canon Selphy QX20: one printer, two photo formats
The arrival of the small Canon Selphy QX20 is the sign of the end of the career of the QX10limited to only the square format 68 x 68 mm. The little new one, more versatile, is in fact capable of printing in square format and in 54 x 85 mm credit card format. Different from the small Canon Zoemini which uses Zink technology and all Fujifilm photo printers using Instax technology, the small Selphy QX20, like the Selphy CP range of the 1000 series, opts for printing technology thermal sublimation.
Well suited to the world of photography
Very far from competing technologies, thermal sublimation represents the direct transition of a body from the solid state to the gaseous state. This process only uses three colors: cyan, magenta, yellow. In the small Canon Selphy QX20, pigmented wax (CMY) replaces ink. Laid on a reel of ribbon mounted in a cassette, the wax is heated to nearly 200°C by microresistors distributed across the print head.
The wax thus instantly passes from the solid state to the gaseous state, then, after projection on the paper, cools and becomes solid again. Thermal sublimation therefore exploits the transparency properties of the wax with, in the end, a print resulting from the superposition of three colored layers to which a layer of protective varnish is added. This system, interesting for color and with a rendering close to a silver print, has the advantage of being fast. It also offers excellent light resistance as well as very good image quality, thanks to a large color range and a “photographic” rendering without frame. But, due to the trichrome process, it does not offer deep blacks and is less comfortable for black and white printing.
