Far behind Fallout

55 million. This is the number of “spectators” who watched this second season during the first 34 days of its broadcast, as shared by the head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke in a presentation in London this Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

A figure that may seem enormous, but must be put into perspective and taken with a pinch of salt. Indeed, when it launched in 2022, the first season recorded 25 million curious viewers in one day and has since its release accumulated 150 million spectators. This score made it one of Prime Video's most popular programs.

It should also be noted that the notion of “spectators” shared by Amazon is vague. Contrary to Netflixwe do not know what Jeff Bezos' firm means by this term and whether the viewer is counted if he only watches, for example, a portion of the series.

Season 2 of Rings of Power launched on August 29.

For comparison, season 4 of The Boysreleased in June, recorded 55 million spectators in 39 days, when the recent Fallout reached more than 65 million spectators in 16 days, thus far distancing this new chapter from Rings of Power.

This season 2 of the most expensive series in television history (the budget is estimated at $1 billion) therefore makes much less than the first. A result which can be explained by the appeal of the novelty that the show generated when it was launched two years ago, but also the reception of the program itself, which received numerous criticisms.

Many spectators therefore decided to stop paying on the way, and The Hollywood Reporter had also relayed that only 45% of them had completed season 1.

Whatever happens, the future of Rings of Power seems more than uncertain. According to the latest news, the streaming platform still seems ready to complete the five announced seasons, but the third season has not yet been made official.

The series will in any case have to review its business plan since the investment currently seems far from profitable for Amazon.
