We no longer expected it, but Thunderbird for Android is finally here

Above all known for its Firefox browser, Mozilla nonetheless abandons its email client open sourceThunderbird. This is evidenced by the last big summer update of the desktop client, which has had a makeover, but also the long-awaited arrival of an Android version. On the work plan for many years to replace Gmail and other Outlook, this version has been available since September 30, 2024 in public beta, before a final deployment which should not take long.

Thunderbird for Android is almost ready

Based on the application too open source K-9 Mail, Thunderbird for Android also allows you to import data. Practical for quickly finding your email accounts and reconnecting to them in a few clicks. In the future, it will also be possible to import data from Thunderbird desktop version.

For this first beta version, Mozilla is asking testers to focus on several key points:

• Automatic configuration
• Manual configuration
• Read messages
• Retrieve messages
• Change account
• Move an email to a folder
• Notifications of a new message
• Edit drafts
• Write, send, reply, forward and delete a message
• Do not suffer data loss

Functional on our side at the time of writing these lines, both for Microsoft and Google accounts, Thunderbird for Android should however require a little more fine-tuning before its deployment.

A very close release schedule

Mozilla will certainly have taken its time to develop this application, but it will not take much longer. Indeed, the first release candidate will arrive in the third week of October. If all goes well, the final and official version will be launched a week later.
