OpenAI launches Canvas, a brand new interface for ChatGPT
OpenAI has introduced a new complementary interface to ChatGPT: Canvas (not to be confused with Canva…). The Canvas (or Canvas in French) opens in a separate window, next to the classic dialog window for ChatGPT, and offers additional workspace for simple writing and coding. Thus, users can use this process to generate writing or code directly in the dedicated window, and then can make modifications if desired.
Artificial intelligence as a collaborative work tool
Built on the model GPT-4o from OpenAI, this feature can also give suggestions and add edits to the answers present in the right side panel. Its use is therefore generally more intuitive than in the past. Daniel Levine, product manager at Canvas, discusses the launch of this feature: “We know a lot of people use ChatGPT for writing and coding, these are two of the main use cases we see. But the chat interface is a bit limited, especially for projects where you want reviews or changes. There's a lot of back and forth and it's hard to compare changes, so that's where Canvas comes in” he says.
This is not the first time that artificial intelligence has offered a dedicated and modifiable workspace: Canvas, for example, enters into direct competition with Artefacts de ClaudeAntropic's artificial intelligence already offers a similar functionality. There is no doubt that in the long term, this type of interface will become a little more popular, with artificial intelligence being able to be considered a more than adequate work companion if used well.
