The Vitale card will soon be dematerialized
In March 2024, former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal signaled his desire to merge the Vitale card and the digital identity card, making this project a priority idea. Then the early legislative elections and the change of Prime Minister took place, which could potentially have rejected such an idea. Ultimately, this will not be the case: the project to dematerialize the Vitale card is indeed still relevant, and seems more alive than ever since Michel Barnier took over the position.
The latter announced it during his speech on October 1: among the major projects of the new government, “hunting for duplicates and fraud” And “the efficiency of public spending“are chosen as remedies for”put the country back on the right trajectory“. So to fight against social fraud, the Prime Minister takes over Gabriel Attal's project, and wishes “attach vital cards to digital identity cards“, he was able to indicate in an interview with the Tribune.
Integration into France Identity from the start of 2025
Various solutions have been proposed over the years to fulfill this new mission: a few months ago, the idea of a biometric vital card seemed popular within the government. But today, according to Le Parisien, a project to integrate the Vitale card into France Identity would be favored. As a reminder, France Identity already allows owners of an electronic identity card (launched in 2021) to completely dematerialize it. The same goes for the permit, accessible in this way since last February.
Thus, if we are to believe the information provided by leParisien, it should be possible to import a Vitale card into France Identity from the first quarter of 2025. Indeed, “enlisting in France Idabilité has the advantage of being operational quite quickly” according to a source from the publication. But that's not all: this solution will make it possible to drastically reduce public spending compared to the creation of a biometric Vitale card, which would require a cost of up to 1.2 billion dinars. euros every 5 years (plus 250 million operating costs).
Note that it is possible today to take advantage of the digital Vitale card.
