Cooking hobs with a screen over their entire surface are coming soon

Hobs with integrated screens are nothing new. Certainly, this type of interface equips very sophisticated models and represents the high end of this product category: this is the case, for example, of the Miele KM 7999 FRlaunched at €5,299. However, despite stratospheric prices, these screens ultimately only represent a very small surface area of the plate. We also notice, on all the devices concerned, a clear demarcation between the small screen and the plate itself. Indeed, until now, the glass used did not allow a display of colors bright enough to be usable.

But Schott, a manufacturer that supplies the industry with sheet glass, seems to have figured out how to overcome this drawback. Its new CERAN Luminoir material offers, according to the manufacturer's website, “light permeability across the entire color spectrum”. We would therefore avoid this famous demarcation between the interface and the cooking surface which, in itself, does not represent a huge revolution. But we can also imagine hobs on which the entire glass surface could be transformed into a real screen for or which would indicate to the user the place of the inductors, the power used on the location or many other things. It would even be theoretically possible to show videos of cooking recipes.

Pay attention to durability

Even if this technology opens up very attractive prospects for the future of our induction hobs, it still raises a few questions, first and foremost the condition of the hob after a few years or even a few months of use. Indeed, glass coverings are very sensitive to scratches and wear marks, even with great care.

The price may also be a problem. As we have said, plates with small screens are already very expensive. What will happen for models where the entire surface can be used as a screen? Certainly, technologies tend to become more widely available very quickly and to see their prices decrease accordingly, but we will undoubtedly have to wait many years before we see CERAN Luminoir glass in all our kitchens.
