Tasting of pan de muerto (brioche) & champurrado (chocolate drink) and free entertainment – Day of the Dead – Barcelonnette (04)
“Barcelonnette is the most Mexican of French towns.
For 3 days, the city is adorned with the colors of Mexico by celebrating the Day of the Dead through unusual and original activities, directly linked to Mexican tradition.
The Day of the Dead echoes the famous Dia de los Muertos, this tradition of pre-Hispanic origin which takes place in Mexico and celebrates the transitory return of the deceased to Earth. Meals, dances and mariachi music punctuate this event, included on UNESCO's representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity since 2008.

– Assembly of the altar of the dead
The centerpiece of the All Souls Day celebration is an altar, or ofrenda. They are built and elaborated by families within their own homes and in cemeteries.
These altars are intended to welcome the spirits who return to the kingdom of the living. Each family loads them with offerings to the deceased: food, drinks, photos, candles, personal objects, etc.
The flowers most used to decorate these altars are cempasuchil or marigold flowers (calendula officinalis). Scattered from altar to tombs, marigold petals guide wandering souls to their resting place. The smoke of copal incense transmits prayers, and purifies the area around the altar.
