Office 2016 and 2019: Microsoft announces the end of support, therefore security updates
Microsoft does not support its operating systems and software indefinitely, which means the end of security updates. We recently saw the Redmond firm recommend switching to Windows 11, or even buy a new compatible PCin order to prepare for the end of Windows 10 updates in October 2025.
A similar pattern just happened for the Office suite of software. Neowin indeed reports thata new publication from Microsoft on its forum discusses the sad future of Office 2016 and Office 2019. In detail, the American company gives a deadline from which these two versions will no longer receive upgrades: October 14, 2025, i.e. at the same time as for Windows 10.
Microsoft explains in passing that the end of support for Office 2016 and Office 2019 means that these versions will no longer benefit from:
- Security patches for discovered vulnerabilities that may make devices, applications, or servers more directly exposed to security breaches
- Bug fixes for discovered issues that may impact the stability and usability of the product
- Technical assistance in case of problem
“Continuing to use products after their support has ended can negatively impact the security, compliance, and productivity of the organization”thus underlines American society. It also adds tips to help users transition to newer solutions.
For people with the Office 2019 and Office 2016 suite, Microsoft offers to go through its Microsoft 365 subscriptions or opt for its new definitive Office 2024 license. Please note, it is still possible to find Office 2021 for sale on various merchant sites, and at a much more accessible price.
