Krypto was not supposed to appear in Supermanbut the arrival of Ozu in James Gunn's life changed everything. This SPA dog was adopted by the director while he was writing the script for the new adventure of the Man of Steel. And this inspired him to add the super-dog Krypto into the story.
Gunn's dog as inspiration
To immortalize Krypto's presence in the film, Gunn shared a short video of Superman and his canine companion observing Earth from the Moon.
The film, soberly titled Superman and expected in theaters in July 2025, will mark the super-dog's first outing in a live-action film of the famous superhero.
The character saw the light of day in 1955 in issue 210 ofAdventure Comicsand has since appeared in several animated films and series. He was also the hero of his own animated series between 2005 and 2006, Krypto the Superdogin which he was Superman's pup before the destruction of Krypton.
It is not yet known how this four-legged friend will be introduced into Superman but Gunn explained the character's origin in a tweet:
“Our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman, inspired Krypto. Ozu lived in a backyard with 60 other dogs and had never been in contact with humans, so The least we can say is that it was difficult.”
Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. Hey… pic.twitter.com/zw8rVqv0n0

“He came to our house and immediately destroyed our house, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my computer,” Gunn continues. “It took a long time before he let us touch him. I remember wondering, 'God, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?' that's how Krypto came into Superman's storyline and changed his story while Ozu changed my life.”
Written and directed by James Gunn, the new film Superman follows the Kryptonian hero as he attempts to combine his extra-terrestrial origins with his life on Earth.
In the feature film, the dog lending his features to Krypto will accompany David Corenswet in the title role, but also Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Anthony Carrigan (Rex Mason / Metamorpho), Isabel Merced (Hawkgirl), and Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner).
