Netflix: after the abrupt cancellations of series, video games are the streamer's new victim
We know Netflix's habit of cancel seriesincluding after a single season. We also know the massive difficulties encountered by many video game studios around the world in recent years to simply keep their heads above water. Today, according to information from journalist Stephen Totilo and the media outlet Game File, a sad mix of these two trends results in the closure of Team Blue.
Netflix suddenly readjusts its video game strategy
Revealed in October 2022, this internal Netflix development studio aimed to offer a multiplatform triple A game based on a new license. Enough to support the streamer's many ambitions in the field, mixing mobile games, cloud gaming And big productions.
To give itself the means to achieve its ambitions, Netflix recruited several industry veterans, such as Chacko Sonny (Overwatch), Joseph Staten (Halo Infinite) or Rafael Grassetti (God of War Ragnarok). A Netflix spokesperson confirmed to Game File that these three people are no longer part of Netflix, which has effectively shut down Team Blue.
A struggling industry
It remains to be seen whether the studio's other recruits, from Blizzard or Bungie in particular, were dispatched to other Netflix studios or also dismissed. Let us remember that Netflix has bought a few independent studios in recent yearslike Night School Studio (Oxenfree), in particular to supply its catalog with mobile games.
If Netflix's exact strategy in October 2024 remains unknown (a concentration on mobile games based on its flagship series?), these formerly independent studios would not be threatened immediately. Still, this is bad news both for those directly affected and for players, and a new negative sign for the industry. If it is still too early to cry about the end of video games on Netflix, previously it was other tech giants like Google (with Stadia) and Amazon who were losing their teeth on video games.
