Windows 11 24H2 confirms a little more that it improves the speed of old PCs
The Redmond firm speaks of a reduction in processor usage of up to 25% with Windows 11 24H2. The installation would be 45% faster and the reboot 40% faster than version 23H2. According to Microsoft, this is a significant improvement and suggests that the update works well on older PCs.
Windows 11 24H2 makes older PCs faster
Some users report increased performance on various forums. For example, on a laptop PC equipped with a ten-year-old Intel Celeron N2940 processor, particularly in terms of responsiveness on tasks like File Explorer, Google Chrome or YouTube. So of course, some devices are not compatible but there are solutions like Rufus 4.6.
Microsoft also mentions that feature update downloads are about 200MB lighter via an optimization of in-app handling, extending conditional downloads to Microsoft Edge. Despite these improvements, bugs have been reported so be careful before installing Windows 11 24H2 on an old PC if you fear instabilities, it is better to wait for feedback from the first users as well as possible fixes.
The performance improvements by Windows 11 24H2 therefore benefit more modest configurations according to initial feedback, giving them a second lease of life. The optimization of the update system suggests that Microsoft will support this version for a long time, despite its push to adopt AI PCs. As a reminder, Windows 10 only has one year left with an end of support scheduled for October 2025.
