Perhaps you are reading these lines from a PC running Windows 11 in its latest update, 24H2. In addition to new features and the improvement of some already present, this major patch was an opportunity for Microsoft to concretely boost its update system. On October 22, Steve DiAcetis, head of Windows development, revealed exactly how this comes to fruition in numbers.
A much faster update system
The man promises reduced installation time, faster reboot, lower usage of system resources (CPU) and smaller downloads. A whole program for those allergic to updates.
To prove it, tests were carried out by the firm. These are based on two identical systems which were compared during the installation of an update, one running under Windows 11 22H2, and the other under Windows 11 24H2. Installation is between 43 and 45% faster on Windows 11 24H2, the required restart time is 33 to 40% shorter, and CPU usage is lower, between 15 and 25%. A significant gain for those in a hurry and those with an aging PC.
A new update is available
Microsoft notes that since versions 22H2 and 23H2 share the same servicing stack, the results would have been identical when comparing Windows 11 23H2 and Windows 11 24H2. The firm's post also states that feature updates should now be around 200MB lighter. This result is made possible by a simple change: if a Microsoft application (such as Notepad, Calendar, Mail, etc.) is already up to date via the Windows Store, they will then not be re-downloaded via Windows Update.
