This concerns only Sony E mount lenses with a selection of two 24×36 zooms, the 28-75 mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 and 70-180 mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 as well as two APS-C zooms, the 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD and 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD.

Two f/2.8 zoom lenses for 24×36 sensor

THE 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (released in 2022) and 70-180 mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (released in 2024) are two links in the essential “holy trinity” of constant aperture zooms f/2.8. These two lenses, versatile in both photo and video, offer a constant aperture and are offered here in the second generation (G2). Note that although they are designed for use with Sony 24×36 hybrids (like the Sony A7 IV for example), it is entirely possible to use them with APS-C boxes (like the A6700 for example) with a conversion coefficient of 1.5x. The 28-75 mm is therefore equivalent to a 42-112.5 mm and the 70-180 mm to a 105-270 mm.

Price-wise, Tamron lenses are much more affordable than the equivalent native models from Sony. For example, the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 was launched in 2021 at a price of 1000 euros and the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II was launched in 2022 at a price of €2,400. The same goes for the Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 which was launched in 2024 at a price of €1,499 and the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II which was launched in 2022 at a price of €2,999.

The immediate discount offered on the 28-75 mm F/2.8 is €100 and that offered on the 70-180 mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 is €150.

Two zoom lenses for APS-C sensor

The zooms Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (released in 2022) and Tamron 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD (released in 2021) are designed to work with Sony hybrids equipped with APS-C sensors. The first is a trans-standard equivalent to a 25.5-105 mm which offers a constant F2.8 aperture and the second an ultra-versatile super telephoto zoom equivalent to a 27-450 mm.
