Soon, WhatsApp will allow you to verify the authenticity of images received. It must be said that disinformation is spreading at high speed with generators like Slab Or Midjourney. This new feature was spotted in beta version 2.24.23.13 of the Android application and integrates Google's reverse image search into messaging.

Checking images with Google

The feature is simple to use. Just open the image in the WhatsApp conversation, access the menu with three vertical dots and select the option to search online. The aim is to allow rapid access to verification in a context of online disinformation.

However, there are limits to this functionality. The first is ergonomic since its positioning in a submenu slows down the intuitiveness of the verification. And the relevance of the results is not always optimal.
WhatsApp specifies, however, that the images analyzed are analyzed with Google, it is not the application itself which carries out the verification.

End-to-end encryption remains preserved, messaging remains faithful to its privacy policy while Brussels wants to analyze images to fight against child crime.

At the moment, the feature is available as a test for Android beta users. The deployment will take place soon but nothing has been indicated for WhatsApp on iOS.
