There was a time when LG built new smartphones that were particularly interesting in their design. The LG Wing is one of them, but due to disappointing sales, the manufacturer decided to abandon smartphones to concentrate on the manufacturing and design of screens. Enough to put a dent in the anthill by working on new types of screens, with new technology. In this case, screens that stretch are not new, and began to be developed around the same time as folding screens at the end of the previous decade. But LG seems to be making giant strides in the field.

A 12-inch screen that stretches to an 18-inch screen

Thus, according to LG, the new screen model that we will discuss here is a simple improvement of a 2022 prototype, which could stretch 20% more compared to its original size. This new model can stretch 50% more than its original size, and should be able to withstand over 10,000 stretches before causing any durability concerns. So the new screen shown by LG today is 12 inches. But, stretched, it can reach 18 inches.

This model can stretch 10,000 times in total, according to LG. This seems like a lot, but it’s a figure to put into perspective: the Galaxy Z Fold 6for example, can fold and unfold more than 200,000 times over a period of 5 years, which actually corresponds to 100 manipulations per day. On this same basis of 100 manipulations per day, this new stretchable screen from LG could well stop working after 100 days of use, which is very little. There is no doubt, however, that we are still at the beginning of this technology, and that the firm is working on ways to increase this durability, in order to make it viable in the context of mass consumption. We remind you that for the moment this is only a prototype, while waiting for a firm to dare to use this technology in a consumer device.
