Fujifilm GFX Eterna: the large format cinema camera
We are obviously familiar with the GFX range of hybrids from Fujifilm, devices equipped with large sensors whose dimensions can make 24x36s pale in comparison. Thus, the GFX100S II integrates a 43.8 x 32.9 mm sensor, i.e. a sensitive surface almost 1.7x larger than that of the sensor of a Canon EOS R5 Mark II or a Nikon Z6 III.
Today, Fujifilm announces the development and therefore the arrival in 2025 of its first medium format cinema camera, the GFX ETERNA in reference to the color negative film designed for cinema.
According to the manufacturer's press release, the GFX ETERNA should use the same sensor as the GFX100S II and the GFX100 IInamely a large format 43.8 x 32.9 mm model in CMOS II technology with a definition of 102 million pixels in HS version for High Speed. It will be coupled with the fifth generation X-Processor. You should know that the GFX100 II is already capable of producing video and its technical characteristics in this area are quite impressive: 8K 30p in 4:2:2 10 bits, 4K 60p, Full HD 120 p, Apple ProRes 422 HQ. Fujifilm is not communicating what this new ETERNA would be capable of doing more or better for the moment. He just says he wants to revolutionize film production, but we can't wait to know all the details.
The manufacturer presented a prototype of the camera during the 2024 edition of InterBEE, a tech show dedicated to content which takes place in Japan from November 13 to 15. The camera is massive, without an electronic viewfinder (designed therefore a priori to work with a return screen), with high-end professional ergonomics and numerous connections.
Alongside the announcement of the development of this new camera, the manufacturer specifies that it is working on a new lens, a 32-90 mm motorized zoom and an adapter for mounting PL mount lenses on the G mount.
