First-generation electric Hyundai KONA: a valid second-hand choice?
Presented in 2023, the second generation of the Hyundai KONA stands out as one of the benchmarks in the 100% electric compact SUV segment, just like the first generation before it, released in 2017.
Good news, this first generation is available second-hand on many car resale platforms, notably those of the Korean manufacturer's network. The network benefits from certification established thanks to more than 100 control points, a State of Health of the battery (SOH), a minimum warranty of 1 year and particularly aggressive rates for rental with option to purchase (LOA) : from 179 euros per month.
Avant-garde design
Since its launch, the Hyundai KONA electric stood out with a resolutely modern style, different from other models. The front face is devoid of the traditional openwork grille, this is replaced by a smooth surface which improves aerodynamics and gives a futuristic touch to the model. The charging hatch is directly integrated into the grille. At the rear, the lights are divided into two sections, blending perfectly into the line of the vehicle, accentuating its dynamic appearance.
A modern and functional interior
Inside, KONA will please techies with two 10.25-inch screens, one for essential information behind the steering wheel and the other for the multimedia system in the center of the dashboard. The latter has Hyundai Bluelink technology.
On entry-level models, this screen is limited to a diagonal of 8 inches, but it nevertheless offers a wireless connection for smartphones with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A voice command also makes it easier to use certain features without the driver needing to take their eyes off the road.
Advanced security and assistance
KONA electric is also well equipped in terms of security. It offers a comprehensive suite of assists, including automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
During its restyling in 2020, Hyundai added blind spot warning and a rear traffic detection system. It even includes an alert to remind you of the presence of objects or passengers in the rear of the vehicle. This level of safety corresponds to the new high safety standards in 2024. KONA is therefore clearly one step ahead in this regard.
Two electric versions available
Because we don't all use our cars the same way, Hyundai offered under the hood of its KONA two engines and two different types of batteries. The first version is equipped with a 64 kWh battery, which offers up to 484 km of autonomy and delivers a power of 204 horsepower.
For urban trips, a version with a smaller 39.2 kWh battery is available, offering a range of 305 km with 136 horsepower. This version, more modest in power, is perfect for daily use.
When it comes to charging time, the Korean firm indicates a time of 47 minutes on a 100 kW fast charger. Hyundai has integrated a regenerative braking system adjustable on several levels which optimizes autonomy by recovering energy during braking, which is useful for extending the distance traveled between two recharges. In town, this also allows you to have a range that can significantly exceed the data announced by the manufacturer.
Buying first generation electric KONA in 2024: the good deal?
In 2024, the First generation Hyundai KONA electric remains a solid alternative on the second-hand market, or even compared to new models, sometimes more expensive and much less well equipped, all with less interesting autonomy.
With monthly payments available from 179 euros, it offers unbeatable value for money. The little extra is that with the Hyundai Promise label, you will also have the freedom to buy a used vehicle without worry.
In addition to the minimum 12-month warranty and 100 checkpoints, Hyundai also checks the battery health (SOH) and its capacity. Enough to largely reassure customers, especially those who are taking the first step towards electric cars.
