Apple TV+: The best Prime Video-inspired feature is here, including on Android TV
This Monday, November 18, we were especially looking forward to taking our lunch break to take the opportunity to watch the first episode of the second season of the excellent Apple TV+ series Silo. Having not used the Apple TV application for a while on our Android TV, we were surprised to notice during our viewing that a new feature had appeared in the app's video player. Called “On Screen” (“InSight” in English), this more or less repeats the operation of one of the main arguments of one of its competitors in the field of streaming.
An ever richer Apple TV application
Until now, Apple TV was best known for being one of the SVoD applications offering the best video and audio quality, but also the one offering the most bonuses around its productions (such as exclusive videos in addition to episodes of series ). Her absence on Android (but not on Android TV or more recently Windows) is also one of its main specificities. While waiting for Apple to definitively open up to something other than its own ecosystem, the application now uses Prime Video's X-Ray tool.
Concretely, during viewing, an “On screen” button allows you to display live the names of the actors and actresses present in the current scene, as well as the music played. No more need to pull out Shazam to find the name of a song or Google to find that name you had on the tip of your tongue. On the other hand, the search engine may still be necessary to find where you have already seen this or that person. Indeed, in the case of casting, clicking on a name will offer you a short bio and the list of other works offered on Apple TV+ where the person appears. No question of seeing a complete filmography unfortunately, while the bio is not always in French.
Already available since last September on iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and Apple TV thanks to the latest tvOS update, “On Screen” is however not yet deployed on the Windows version of Apple TV. The deployment on Android TV seems to date back to the end of September/beginning of last October with version 15.0 of the app.
