The war that Google and American justice have been waging for several months could well take a major turn in the coming days. Alphabet, Google's parent company, could be forced to resell one of its main products, namely the Google Chrome browser. This would be a direct consequence of the decision taken last August by federal judge Amit Mehta. He officially declared that Google had demonstrated anti-competitive practices by signing agreements with Apple, Samsung and Mozilla to be the default search engine.

A radical solution to balance forces

According to the very serious media Bloomberg, antitrust officials from the Department of Justice, as well as various American states, will ask the judge to make several decisions this Wednesday, November 20. In addition to the resale of Google Chrome, measures around artificial intelligence and even the Android mobile operating system would be required. We haven't seen this since Microsoft's setbacks in the late 90s with its monopoly linked to Windows.

The biggest part, however, remains the resale of the most used browser in the world today. Its loss by Google could have very significant consequences, particularly in terms of the collection of valuable data from its users, essential to properly offer targeted advertising subsequently. Google Chrome is also a major gateway to the firm's other services, such as its Gemini AI, or its search engine, here mainly targeted for monopoly.

Google soon to be fragmented?

For Lee-Anne Mulholland, vice president of regulatory affairs at Google, declared that the Department of Justice “continues to push a radical agenda that goes well beyond the legal issues in this case.” She added: “the government putting its finger on the scale in this way would harm consumers, developers, and America's technology leadership at precisely the time it is needed most.

See you in the next episode, as the re-election of Donald Trump as president of the United States could influence the matter, in one direction or the other.
