It seems that the government has made its decision concerning the amount of the ecological bonus allocated to the purchase of an electric vehicle (subject to conditions), and the decree should be published next week.

After the removal of the conversion bonus or the tax on EV charging at the workplacethe ecological transition receives a new lead in the wing, which is not a surprise as it was expected: the ecological bonus is in sharp decline.

No one escapes

While EV sales declined in 2024, growing very timidly and above all thanks to successful social leasing, the year 2025 should be even more complicated for manufacturers. However, the latter must absolutely sell electric vehicles in their mix in order to avoid heavy fines.

While the ecological penalty for purchasing a thermal car should be higher than ever, that of the bonus takes the opposite path, according to our colleagues from Les Echos. The allocation rules had already become more complex in 2024, excluding models manufactured far away, while dropping from €5,000 to €4,000 for a car whose purchase price, excluding options, was below 47 000 €. The least well-off households, whose reference tax income per share is less than or equal to €15,400, benefited from a bonus remaining at €7,000.

This year, everyone will have to put a little more into their pockets to afford a new electric car. In fact, the bonus goes from €4,000 to €3,000 for the majority of French people, while the two richest deciles will only be able to benefit from €2,000 in government aid.

The most modest households, for their part, suffer the greatest reduction, since the aid would only be €4,000 in 2025 (€7,000 in 2024). These households will still be able to hope to benefit from social leasing 2025, but which will also be revised to be less costly for the government, and therefore less advantageous for buyers.

While the maximum threshold for triggering the bonus is still not known, but could also fall, another piece of bad news is becoming clearer. Indeed, you will probably not have to wait long if you wish to make a purchase, since the government will decide on an envelope and not deviate from it. In other words, if the amount allocated to the ecological bonus is reached this summer, no more bonuses will be given before 2026.
