Chinese researchers from Beihnag University have developed the BHMbot-B. Behind this somewhat barbaric name hides a miniature robot 15 mm long whose look resembles that of an insect. In addition to its very small size, this micro robot has a significant advantage for those who would like to use it in very small spaces: its speed is very high, both forward and reverse.

Fast and precise mobility

More precisely, the researchers indicate a speed of 360 mm/s forward, and 338 mm/s backward. An impressive performance that can allow the solution to especially shine in confined spaces where turning around is impossible. Dead ends should also not be a problem for him.

To achieve this result, the robot is made up of different elements (an electromagnetic actuator, a cantilever and a four-bar connection system) which react to each other according to wireless controls based on vibration frequencies.

Many possible areas of application

Thanks in particular to its rear legs designed with tiny rollers to minimize friction, the BHMbot-B is able to move on glass, sand or even curved tubes. It is also capable of carrying a load of 32 times its weight, such as a camera, a battery or a gyroscope. Next, researchers will work on adding environmental sensors and an autonomous navigation system.

The team's full research can be found in the journal Science Advances.
