BYD, which is vying for the title of the world's leading electric car manufacturer with Tesla, has made a place for itself in the market thanks to models with aggressive prices. The arrival of BYD in Europe, however, was not as noticed as it could have been, with prices ultimately not so competitive here, particularly compared to other Chinese manufacturers. BYD is now trying to correct the situation in a difficult context, where electric cars produced in China must face compensating customs duties at European level and have been stripped of the ecological bonus in France.

THE Sealion 7the latest model launched by BYD in Europe, is an electric SUV rival to the Tesla Model Y. Launched at €46,990 in France, a price higher than that of its main competitor, it seemed poorly equipped to find a place in such a competitive segment. Only a few weeks after its launch, BYD has already decided to put in place a discount on its Sealion 7, now priced from €42,990 via a special edition called 30 years. The latter celebrates the anniversary of the conglomerate BYD, which launched into the automobile industry in 2003 with the success it is known for. The Sealion 7 30 Years is based on the entry-level Comfort finish and available only with the Atlantis Gray shade, between gray and blue.

A sufficient discount?

This offer, valid until December 31, 2024, allows the Chinese SUV to lower its prices by €4,000. For comparison, a Tesla Model Y Propulsion is sold in France from €44,990 excluding bonuses. This state aid, from which the Sealion 7 does not benefit, places the two models at the same price for the two richest deciles, who are only entitled to a €2,000 bonus. For others, the amount of this aid can reach €3,000 or €4,000 and thus keep the Model Y at a lower price than the Sealion 7.

At this price, the BYD SUV offers 483 km of autonomy and already quite comprehensive equipment. However, the competition is tough. In addition to the Tesla Model Y, Toyota sells its bZ4X from €34,900, MG has Marvel R in stock at €34,490 and Leapmotor is offering its C10 at €34,900 via an introductory offer.
