Bruitparif is a company based in Île-de-France. Hydra anti-noise radars will arrive nationally by the end of 2025. These devices are based on two acoustic units each equipped with four microphones, a wide-angle camera and two dedicated cameras for reading license plates.
Thus, it is possible for Hydra anti-noise radars to monitor an area of approximately 15 meters, on each side, even in the event of dense traffic with several vehicles.
Several tests were carried out from January to October 2022 in seven French cities including Paris, Nice and Toulouse. These tests showed the effectiveness of the device. Bruitparif estimates that each radar can identify between 5 and 15 infringing vehicles every day. Mainly those equipped with modified exhaust pipes. Unaltered vehicles and electric models are generally below 85 decibels.
In the event of an infraction, offenders face a fine of €135, or €90 if paid within 15 days. The effective verbalization phase will begin in spring 2025 after the official approval of Hydra anti-noise radars in seven pilot cities.
Europe is interested in anti-noise radars
Hydra anti-noise radars are of interest on a European scale. Tests have been carried out in large metropolises such as Berlin, Brussels, Barcelona and Geneva with promising results. During the Décibels d'or competition organized by the National Noise Council, the device was rewarded in 2024.
