28 years later: an anxiety-inducing trailer for the sequel to the cult infected film
Remember: in 2002, director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland shook up the small world of zombie films with 28 days later and its infected. Almost two decades after a first sequel, a third opus entitled 28 years later is about to hit theaters in 2025, and its first trailer has just skyrocketed our expectations.
An air of The Last of Us
And these promising first images set the tone for a sequel that is more scabrous than ever. All these years after the virus appeared in Britain, humanity seems to survive thanks to small isolated communities, which protect themselves against infected people and a virus that has evolved over time, but also against groups of humans particularly violent.
The official synopsis is as follows: “Britain has lived for 28 years under the yoke of a terrible epidemic that infects people and turns them into rabid humans. A few groups of uninfected people remain. The story focuses on a young boy who seeks a doctor to help her mother dying.”

A story which will obviously recall those of other post-apocalyptic stories such as The Last of Us, The Walking Dead or even Planet of the Apes. But this is only a first trailer, and we can bet that the Boyle / Garland duo (already at the helm of the first film) has some surprises in store for us, particularly around the evolution of the virus.
But one of the surprises in this trailer (and one that fans quickly noticed) is the supposed appearance of the character Jim, played by Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer, Peaky Blinders).
Heroes of 28 days later and announced to the casting of this sequel, the very emaciated and visibly infected character seems to appear for a brief moment. The image is fleeting, but it obviously launched its share of theories.
As a reminder, when it was released in 2002, 28 days later was a minor revolution for the zombie film genre, replacing the listless, slow-moving undead with twitchy, rampaging infected. A development which has since become popular.
Directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, sunshine), and written by Boyle and Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War), 28 years later can count on a nice casting glimpsed in these first images: Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Bullet Train), Jodie Comer (The Last Duel), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel).
While 28 years later is expected on June 18, 2025 in cinemas, a sequel entitled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple is already in the pipeline. Still written by Alex Garland, it is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) and its filming is currently underway.
In addition to the trailer, posters of 28 years later were also revealed:
