While we believed that the Freebox Ultra red would be Free's last announcement for 2024, this start of the week surprises us with the announcement of another Internet box by the ISP. In fact, the company has just marketed a new model soberly named 5G boxes.

Designed in collaboration with Nokia, this new solution takes advantage of the 5G network to provide Internet access. Free also talks about a downstream speed of up to 1.5 Gbit/s, compared to 130 Mbit/s upstream. Enough to surpass other operators, also offering 5G boxes.

Besides these speeds, Free has another argument for the 5G Box : wifi 7. The opportunity to benefit from a faster and more stable connection, while limiting latency and increasing the number of devices that can be connected to it (up to 100 simultaneously).

Obviously, Xavier Niel's operator does not stop there. OQEE is there to allow access to 230 TV channels, but also replays and its ASVOD service (OQEE Ciné).

Finally, the price is obviously positioned below the competition: €29.99 per month for the first year, then €39.99 per month. For information, Orange is €42.99 per month, compared to €40.99 for Bouygues Telecom and €39.99 for SFR.

Important point, the Free 5G Box is not for everyone. We can indeed read in the FAQ that the offer is reserved for people “whose home is not yet eligible for fiber or whose connection is unavailable” and who have a “very good 5G coverage” Free in their accommodation.

To find out if you are eligible, a coverage map is available at the following address.

Regarding the installation of this 5G box, you simply need to connect it to a power outlet. The pre-installed SIM card will then allow you to connect to the wifi network, which will be accessible in the blink of an eye thanks to the connection QR Code available in the box.

Information in brief: the fees for setting up the 5G Box are €29, compared to €19 for cancellation fees. For people leaving another operator for this solution, Free covers up to €50 in cancellation fees.
