Honda and Nissan are considering a merger: towards the creation of a new automobile giant?
In bad shape, Nissan has reportedly entered into discussions with Honda to consider a merger between the third and second Japanese manufacturer, respectively, which are already partners. These discussions would also have been accelerated by an interest from Taiwanese Foxconn to get its hands on Nissan, we learn Nikkei.
For the moment, Honda and Nissan have not made their intentions official. There could also be talk of integrating Mitsubishi in the event of a merger, of which Nissan is the main shareholder. In this case, the three manufacturers could give birth to a new giant in the automobile industry, capable of competing with Toyota (10.3 million sales in 2023), the largest Japanese manufacturer and even in the world. Between them, Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi have combined nearly 8.4 million sales in 2023.
Remember that although the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi alliance is no longer at the top of its form, Renault still owns nearly 36% of Nissan's capital. The links between the French manufacturer and its Japanese partner are, however, tumultuous and Renault will therefore not this time be the one to come to the rescue of Nissan, which only has 12 to 14 months of survival left if a new major investor does not is not found, confided a senior official close to the manufacturer to Financial Times.
