One step forward, two steps back

The series Win or Lose follows the members of a softball team as they prepare for a championship game. Each of its eight episodes focuses on a different character's life off the field to highlight their point of view.

The decision to modify a transgender “storyline” apparently took place a few months ago. Disney chose to remove several lines of dialogue referencing the gender identity of one of the young characters, because they believe that: “When it comes to animated content aimed at young audiences, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain topics with their children on their own terms and when the time is right.”

The character in question remains in the series, but it will therefore not be mentioned that he is transgender.

“I was very discouraged. As soon as I received the script, I couldn't wait to share my experience to help other young transgender people become empowered,” said Stewart to Deadline. “I knew this would be a very important debate. Transgender stories matter and they deserve to be heard.”

His mother, Keisha, was also surprised and disappointed by the company's decision, adding: “There may be some parents who aren't ready to talk about it, but this is the world we live in and everyone should be represented. Everyone deserves to be recognized.

And I felt like it was another setback for the LGBTQ community, because it's very hard for transgender teenagers…transgender people, periodshe continues. Especially when you're young and trying to figure out how to navigate this world that you live in and how to become yourself.”
