This is a return to basics for OpenAI which had a robotics division at its creation, led by co-founder Wojciech Zaremba. Unfortunately, the project was abandoned in 2021 before a prototype was even released.
During a podcast, Wojciech Zaremba explained that the lack of training data prevented achieving the desired level of intelligence for a robot.

But signs of a revival of this project have appeared. Earlier this year, OpenAI posted several job postings to recruit research engineers for a robotics team. The posts specifically talked about training multimodal language models to “unlock new capabilities for our partners’ robots”.

Partnerships are already taking shape through strategic investments. In February 2024, OpenAI participated in a fundraising for Figure AI with other big names like Microsoft, Nvidia, Intel and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The company has also invested in 1X Technology to integrate GPT models into their robots.

Then, in November, Sam Altman's company supported Physical Intelligence, a start-up that develops AI software for robots to allow them human-like understanding and dexterity.
