iPhone 18 Pro: a still uncertain new feature for Apple smartphones in 2026
While the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is preparing to play the game of thin borders around the screen, Apple would consider putting an end to it in the years to come, potentially with the iPhone 18 Pro. However, everything would not go as well as planned on the development side.
Indeed, The Elec revealed this December 24, 2024 in a blog post that the two suppliers involved in this project, Samsung Display and LG Display, would encounter various technical challenges. A problematic situation for the Apple firm, which would impact the launch of a first smartphone with a borderless screen.
The media thus explains that the release of an iPhone with borderless OLED screen “is currently uncertain because technological development is not sufficient to eliminate all edges”.
9to5Mac also specifies that Apple would like to overcome some technical difficulties, including the fact of “make the junction between the curved screen and the body of the device watertight”ensure the proper functioning of the antenna, and “avoid the magnifying effect that you generally get with curved screen edges”.
The Elec ends by specifying that internal sources have shared that *“if Apple wanted to release a borderless OLED iPhone in 2026 [soit les iPhone 18]it should have already concluded technical discussions with the manufacturers, but they are still in discussion”.
Uncertainty is therefore around this new type of panel for iPhone, which could potentially be pushed back to 2027 or 2028. As a reminder, the rumors mentioned a screen similar to that of the Apple Watch, with curved edges up to the frame metal frame.
While we wait to learn more about iPhone's borderless output window around the screen, theiPhone SE 4 intends to show up at the start of 2025. You will then have to wait until the start of the 2025 school year to benefit from a design innovation with theiPhone 17 Air.
